The grammar boxes model theform of the key structures from the presentation text.A note below each grammar box directs students to theGrammarreferencesection of the Workbook, where the grammar point isexplained in more detail.Having already experimented with the new structures earlier in theunit, students are encouraged to reflect on correct usage in moredetail. The grammar exercises provide practice of form and usage, moving from carefully controlled exercises to more demandingproduction. Each grammar page has an optionalFinished?activity. Theseoptional fun activities are designed for fast-finishers and provideflexibility in mixed ability classes. There is also aGame!feature onsome of the grammar pages, which provides personalized practicein a less formal context.Main unitsEach main unit is divided as follows:Presentation2 pagesVocabulary1 pageGrammar1 pageCommunication1 pageGrammar1 pageSkills2 pagesCulture1 pageReview1 pageCommunicationOne page in every unit focuses on everyday English. Thelanguage is presented in a dialogue. The dialogue also reviews thevocabulary and grammar from the previous pages, and exposesstudents to the language of the subsequent grammar page.A pronunciation activity draws students’ attention to either aspecific sound or the use of intonation. The students then listen tothis language in different contexts before practising it themselvesin the pairwork activity.PresentationThe presentation dialogue on the left-hand page exposes studentsto the theme, grammar, vocabulary and functions of the unit ina photostory format. The exercises on the right-hand page allowstudents to explore, use and personalize the language of the unitbefore it is formally presented and practised on theVocabularyandGrammarpages. The photostories reflect the aspirations of the students, usingfamiliar contexts to motivate and engage them. Each unit focuseson a different episode in the lives of the characters. In level 1, the story takes place in a performing arts school andfollows the story of a new student, Hollie. Hollie is happy to be ather new school and quickly makes friends, but she also makes anenemy. The story culminates in the production of a school musical. In level 2, we follow the story of Tom. Tom loves basketball, but heis having problems with poor marks in his other school subjects. Inthe end, with the help of a friend, Tom makes the right choices andeverything works out for the best.In level 3, the story is about a team of students who work togetherto come up with a winning idea, which will be of great benefit totheir school.Following on from the presentation text, students complete aseries of questions to check basic comprehension. TheCheck itout!box feature draws students’ attention to useful colloquialexpressions in the dialogue.SkillsTwo pages of every unit contain targeted skills work designed toequip students with the necessary strategies to build confidenceand competence in reading, listening, speaking and writing.Skillslessons also provide a way of consolidating and recyclingthe language students have studied throughout the unit, whilstexploring different aspects of the unit topic.Readingtexts deal with the main topic of the unit in a factualway using real-life contexts. Comprehension exercises start witha skimming activity followed by more detailed questions thatgradually increase in difficulty as the series progresses.Listeningactivities extend the topic of the unit. A variety ofactivity formats are used to help students develop listeningcomprehension skills.TheSpeakingandWritingsections give students the opportunityto respond to the unit topic with their own ideas. To help studentsorganize their ideas, both sections usually begin with a writtenpreparation stage. The aim is to strike a balance between givingclear, guided models on the page on the one hand, and allowingstudents freedom to express themselves and experiment withnewly-acquired vocabulary and structures on the other.Language focusThe exercises in theLanguage focussection familiarize studentswith the language of the unit. Students focus on the targetlanguage in relation to specific scenes from the photostory. Inthe pairwork exercises students have the opportunity to try outthe new language in a personalized context, following carefullycontrolled models.CultureAt the end of every unit, there is aCulturelesson based on areading text, which provides students with an insight into aparticular aspect of British culture, or broadens the students’knowledge of life in English-speaking countries. The texts aresupported with comprehension exercises, which start with askimming activity followed by more detailed questions.EachCulturelesson concludes with a group project designed tohelp students develop their language skills and their creativity.Students work together in teams using the notes and instructionsfor the project on the corresponding Workbook page.VocabularyEach unit presents two vocabulary sets related to the topic ofthe unit and previewed in the presentation lesson. The main setappears on theVocabularypage, and a secondary set is presentedon theSkillspage.Look!boxes contain useful tips and drawattention to potential pitfalls, including spelling rules, exceptions orirregular forms, collocations, and notes about English usage.Students once again have the opportunity for guided speakingpractice with a pairwork activity at the end of the lesson.Introduction© Copyright Oxford University Press5 [ Pobierz całość w formacie PDF ]
